Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is no stranger to controversy. This time, he made disrespectful remarks toward a female reporter.

Once again, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton finds himself in the spotlight of controversy after disrespecting a female NFL reporter after she finished asking him an honest question.

The female reporter, Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer, was asking the 2015 NFL MVP how he felt about his wide receivers playing well, particularly Devin Funchess embracing the physicality of his routes and gaining extra yards. As soon as she said the word “routes”, a grin came across Newton’s face before he smiled and made the following remark after he finished asking her question.

"“It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes … like … it’s funny.”"

Here is a video of this viral interview.

Did Newton mean any harm by this remark? It certainly seems like he was presenting the most amount of sarcasm possible, so there might be your answer to that.

The fact is, he started off his response to her question by focusing on her gender and why the fact that she is a female made her question more interesting, which qualifies as at least somewhat disrespectful, especially to the reporter in that moment in front of all of the others in attendance.

While he probably meant no harm by this comment, that kind of wording is not the sort of thing a professional football player should be saying in an interview, especially in this day and age when it’s so easy to be misinterpreted and have controversial comments, which these comments were, blow up.

Should Cam Newton be fined by the NFL for these remarks or is the aftermath of these remarks simply an overreaction?
