South Park returned to its classic formula in last week’s Columbus Day episode. But are they going to build off that momentum with a new episode tonight?

While some have enjoyed South Park’s newer format of serialized seasons, others have yearned for simpler times when they didn’t have to invest time in the show and look forward a new adventure every week — perhaps those people ate too many member berries.

Either way, the writers hinted at a less serialized structure at the end of season 20, with less of a focus on current events, and have followed up on that so far.

Last episode felt like classic South Park. They made fun of Columbus Day, which Cartman thought was a holiday built simply so kids could have a day off school, victimization and sites like Ancestry.com. It was hilarious to see Randy go so far as to tongue a Native American to prove he was part Native only to have that person fall in love with him. There were no references to the current news cycle, while continuing plots, such as Heidi and Cartman’s relationship, took a backseat.

Episodes like that are the reason why people fell in love with South Park in the first place. But anyone wondering if the next one will follow up on that trend will have to wait an extra week.

When the creators of South Park first announced the schedule for season 21 , they set aside three dates as “dark weeks” where they wouldn’t air a new episode. It just so happens that Oct. 4 is one of them. Even its lead-out show, Broad City, will be taking the week off.

It could be that they’re taking the week off is because of Columbus Day, which is coming up next Monday. If that’s the case, it makes even more sense that they’d do an episode on it the week before the holiday. If anything, fans can simply watch the Columbus Day episode to hold themselves over until the 11th — it really is worth re-watching.
