Patriots at Buccaneers: Highlights, score and recap

The New England Patriots defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football, 19-14. Here are all the highlights, the game recap and the final score.

It came down to the final play, but it was the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots that came away with a Week 5 victory on Thursday night, 19-14. New England improves to 3-2 on the year, while Tampa Bay falls to 2-2 on the season.

The Patriots would take a 13-7 lead into the half on Thursday Night Football in Week 5. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady would throw a terrible interception to Tampa Bay rookie defensive back Justin Evans on New England’s first series. However, that would not result in any points for the Buccaneers.

New England would get on the board first with a Stephen Gostkowski field goal. Tampa Bay would take the lead two possessions later with a Doug Martin touchdown dive. The Patriots would respond with a Brady pass to receiver Chris Hogan for six. Gostkowski would add another field goal before the end of the half.

The storyline of the night was absolutely rancid field goal kicking of Nick Folk for Tampa Bay. He missed three field goals on the night, all of which were horrible. Folk missed a 56-yarder at the end of the second quarter, followed by a missed 49-yarder and a missed 31-yarder. Had he made all three of those kicks, the game would have been tied at 17.

Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston would orchestrate a late touchdown-scoring drive on the New England defense, finding tight end Cameron Brate for six. Tampa Bay would attempt an onside kick, but would be unsuccessful in the attempt. New England would respond with another Gostkowski field goal, his fourth of the day to make it 19-14 Patriots.

Tampa Bay would have 59 seconds to take it the length of the field. With three seconds left on the clock, Winston’s final pass attempt would fall incomplete in the New England end zone. A costly false start penalty on that drive would inevitably cost the Buccaneers the game. It took them five yards back and knocked10 seconds off the clock Tampa Bay didn’t have.

New England should feel relieved to be 3-2 without playing its best ball of the season. Tampa Bay has to be kicking itself (pun intended) knowing that it let this one at home get away.

1. Stephen Gostkowski: Gostkowski had 13 of the Patriots’ 19 points on the night. He was a perfect 4-4 on field goal attempts and had an extra point.
2. Tom Brady: Brady completed 30 of 40 passes for 303 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He had two carries for five yards.
3. Jameis Winston: Winston completed 26 of 46 passes for 334 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. He had three rushes for 11 yards.

Next Game
