NLDS 2017: Here’s why the Diamondbacks will beat the Dodgers
3. Pitching
Remember when the Diamondbacks signed then-Dodgers stud Zack Greinke to a $206.5 million deal? This is why. Arguably, the signing was a horrible one at the time. However, as Greinke leads the Arizona pitching core into battle, the money seems well spent.
Despite a rocky start to the post-season thus far for Greinke, he’s sure to bounce back. The 33-year-old brings years of experience to the table with him. In addition to Greinke, the Diamondbacks have an abundance of talented starting pitchers. Above all, pitching wins games in October. For this reason, the Diamondbacks are set to make their mark in the postseason.
Taijuan Walker is projected to start Game 1 of the NLDS. Walker posted a 3.49 ERA during the regular season and racked up nine wins. For Game 2, it’s a toss-up. The Diamondbacks can take their chances with Greinke again or start Robbie Ray, who has been phenomenal in 2017. In any case, the outcome of Game 1 will largely influence who takes the bump to begin Game 2. If the Dodgers win, it’s likely that fans see Greinke again on short rest. If the Diamondbacks capture game one, except Ray. Either way, the Diamondbacks are in good hands pitching-wise. In addition, Arizona has starter Patrick Corbin available as well. There’s no telling where he will factor in, but he’s sure to play a part.
Ultimately, Arizona has one of the most lethal starting rotations in baseball. It’s in late innings where they struggle. With pitchers getting much-needed rest, the Diamondbacks can afford to give the ball to Greinke and Ray, as they did in the wild-card game. However, if Arizona’s starters play half as well as they did in the regular season, that will hardly be necessary.
