2. Paul Goldschmidt

He’s the veteran, the vocal leader, the spirit of the team; he’s Paul Goldschmidt.

Of course, the Diamondbacks have had their fair share of ups and downs throughout the last few seasons. But, one factor has remained constant; Goldschmidt. The 30-year-old still plays as if he’s in his mid-20’s and you can always tell he’s having fun. During his time in the majors, Goldschmidt has largely been the most underrated and under-appreciated player in the league. In 2017, Goldschmidt hit .297/.404/.563. He’s been one of the MLB’s most consistent players at the plate and in the field. The first baseman also hit 36 home runs on the season, placing him sixth amongst his National League colleagues.

But, it’s not exactly his play that fuels the fire of his teammates, it’s his spirit. Goldschmidt has been the light at the end of the tunnel for Arizona. He’s been the bright spot on a near 100 loss team and has provided not only his teammates but also Diamondbacks fans, with hope. The amazing thing about Goldschmidt throughout his time in the MLB has been the lack of hype around him. He seems to have no problem flying under the radar and being one of the MLB’s elite talents. Largely, fans always hear about the greatness of the Mike Trout and Bryce Harper’s of the league. Meanwhile, Goldschmidt is on their level and has been for years. It’s this underrated approach that he’s taken to his career that has defined the Diamondbacks.

Given his time to shine in the postseason, Goldschmidt will likely seize the opportunity, as he does regularly. He provides the Diamondbacks with the sense of hope, but brings with him a sense of calmness and a humble personality, as well. Goldschmidt is the perfect player to lead Arizona during this World Series push, both on and off the field.
