As college football reached the official halfway point of the season, there was one lesson taught to a few playoff contenders: never look ahead. Don’t do it. Here’s what next week’s Top 25 could look like after some major shaking up that’s bound to happen.

The beautiful thing about college football other than mascots fighting each other and random players you’ve never heard of booming 60-yard punts out of nowhere is the fact that anyone can be beaten on any given Saturday (or Thursday … or Friday).

NC State took down reigning Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson and Louisville on Thursday night to remain one of the country’s hottest teams, while Michigan State took their eighth meeting with Michigan in the last decade playing in a monsoon.

A fellow “down, but not out” team that joined Michigan in falling for the ranks of the unbeaten was Baker Mayfield and the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners, who had won 14 in a row before Saturday’s mind-boggling loss to Iowa State on Saturday, now find themselves in jeopardy of missing the playoff for the second straight season.

You can’t predict college football. It’s a bizarro world, full of nonsense and beauty.

We’ve reached the halfway point in the season. Some things have stayed the same. Look at Alabama. They’re still a flying death machine of physicality and power.

Some things have actually changed. Notre Dame isn’t going to finish 4-8. Georgia is running the dang ball. Clemson is winning with defense. UCF isn’t a 0-12 program anymore.

Before we get too off-topic, here’s this week’s Top 25 projections.
