Supergirl is finally back, and season 3 finds Kara in a darker place, dealing with the loss of Mon-El by devoting all her energy to being a superhero.
The end of Supergirl season 2 was not very kind to Kara Danvers and that is having a big impact on her to start season 3.
In order to save the world, Kara had to sacrifice her relationship will Mon-El, as Earth’s atmosphere will literally kill him now. So, Kara is dealing with the loss in a way only a superhero with a dual identity can. By only being Supergirl, not Kara Danvers.
She may be an emotional wreck, but Kara is now doing even more to protect National City. It even looks like Supergirl is getting honored by the city. That, of course, makes for the perfect target for an attack from the episode’s big threat.
Here is the synopsis for the episode, “Girl of Steel”, from SpoilerTV.
"DREAM A LITTLE DREAM OF YOU — Kara (Melissa Benoist) deals with the loss of Mon-El (Chris Wood) by focusing all her energy on being Supergirl and the mysterious new threat against National City. Alex (Chyler Leigh) confesses a secret to Maggie (guest star Floriana Lima) about their impending nuptials. A citizen of National City has a mysterious connection to Kara, and Lena (Katie McGrath) makes a bold move."
Base on the synopsis, the character with “a mysterious connection” to Kara will likely be Reign. And based on the promotional photos, she is saving people during the attack not causing it. So, it looks like the episode 1 threat to National City will be someone other than Reign. Possibly another DC villain, Morgan edge.

Elsewhere in the episode, it looks like Maggie said yes to Alex’s proposal. But could Floriana Lima only recurring this season already spell trouble for the couple? And Kara is having dreams. In them, she sees Mon-El as well as her biological mother (now played by Erica Durance).
