The Kansas City Chiefs stay perfect by knocking off the Houston Texans on Sunday Night Football, 42-34. Here are the highlights, the recap and final score.
The Kansas City Chiefs keep the winning streak alive, as they handled the Houston Texans on Sunday Night Football in Week 5, 42-34. Kansas City remains the last undefeated team in the NFL, improving to 5-0 on the year. Houston stumbles to 2-3 on the season.
Houston saw its franchise cornerstone in defensive end J.J. Watt suffer a season-ending knee injury early in the game. While the Texans would try their best to respond, they didn’t have the giddy-up defensively to keep pace with Alex Smith and the Kansas City offense.
Smith and his rookie running back Kareem Hunt might be one and two in the early NFL MVP race. Kansas Cit not only has a sound defense, but perhaps the most explosive and versatile offense in all of football.
While Houston couldn’t hang defensively, the Texans should be so happy that rookie Deshaun Watson is the answer for them at the quarterback position. It took a while for him to come into rhythm, but he was sensational in the second half.
Watson completed 16 of 31 passes for 261 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. As a runner he had three rushes for 31 yards. He may have lost to the best team in football at home in primetime, but the future, and present, is blinding bright for the Texans at the quarterback position with Watson under center.
The Chiefs have cemented themselves as the best team in football. One could argue teams like the Denver Broncos, the Green Bay Packers or the Philadelphia Eagles could be No. 2, but the gap could not be more vast at this time.
Houston is in a three-way tie for second-place in the AFC South with the Indianapolis Colts and the Tennessee Titans. The Texans are only a game back of the division-leading Jacksonville Jaguars. It’s a tough loss, but Houston should be alright.
Three Stars
- Alex Smith: Smith completed 29 of 37 passes for 324 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also had five carries for 19 yards.
- Tyreek Hill: Hill had four catches for 68 yards. He also had two punt returns for 75 yards and a touchdown.
- Kareem Hunt: Hunt had 29 carries for 107 yards rushing. He also had three catches for nine yards.
