What’s next for the New York Giants after a horrendous start and season-ending injury to their offensive star?

After an 0-5 start and Odell Beckham Jr.’s season-ending injury, questions are being asked in the Meadowlands as to what’s next for the New York Giants. Who’d have thought that after five weeks, the Giants would be the winless team in New York? Although not much can be fixed this season, the Giants can set themselves up for future success and a change on offense is definitely in store for the Giants.

As bad as Eli Manning has been, it’d be unrealistic to bench him — benching Manning for rookie Davis Webb is out of the question. But that still leaves the awfully understaffed position of wide receiver, and the offense more generally.

The Giants announced Monday that Odell Beckham Jr. will likely miss the rest of the season after suffering an ankle fracture on Sunday that will require surgery. The Giants offense significantly improved after Beckham’s return from injury three weeks ago and while the team still looked awful, Beckham’s presence surely played an important role. However, now he’s done for the rest of the season, one of four New York receivers who went down with an injury during Week 5. Head coach Ben McAdoo now has to fill those gaps.

Well, Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson may offer one answer. He and Terrell Owens reached out to the Giants via Twitter on Sunday. Whether or not they are serious, the Giants should certainly at least consider it. Ochocinco and Owens would, if nothing else, bring in revenue and boost PR. Furthermore, the Giants receiving core can’t get any more abysmal, so why not bring in veterans to attempt to help out?

Other than Ochocinco and Owens, the Giants’ options are few and far between. In all likelihood, the offensive performance will just not get better. New York could possibly bring back 30-year-old Victor Cruz, who they cut earlier this season. Veteran receiver Vincent Jackson is also available.

As for the rest of the personnel, the Giants should take a look at what their neighbors, the Jets, are doing with young players. With no shot at contending in the short-term, there’s no sense in fielding older players. Problems on the offensive line and at running back are too serious to fix this season. Period. The Giants need to wait for the offseason and draft to address those issues.

In the meantime, McAdoo should give playing time to his young players as opposed to dragging on through the season with those who have little time left. For now, the goal should be the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
