San Diego Padres: Keep and flip Jhoulys Chacin

At 71-91, the Padres exceeded expectations to an extent in 2017. The fact remains that they are years away from contending in one of the toughest divisions in baseball. Their path back to contention is made even more difficult by the rise of the Rockies and Diamondbacks. GM A.J. Preller can only continue stockpiling prospects and spending aggressively on the international front.

One of the biggest bright spots for the Padres this year was 29-year-old right-hander Jhoulys Chacin. The Rockies had high hopes for Chacin after he went 37-40 with a 3.58 ERA from 2010 to 2013. Unfortunately, the injury bug struck Chacin hard in 2014, and he went only 9-16 with a 4.81 ERA over the next three years.

Finally healthy, Chacin was able to pitch 180.1 innings for the Padres in 2017 and went 13-10 with a 3.89 ERA. He still battles command issues, walking 3.6 per nine and leading the league in hit batters with 14.

The Padres would be rise to attempt to keep Chacin on a low-risk contract for at least one more year. Preller needs assets to try to flip at the deadline next seasons. Re-sign Chacin for a few million now, swap him for a solid prospect in July.
