One offseason move each MLB team needs to make
Boston Red Sox: Trade for Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins star right fielder Giancarlo Stanton has made it clear he wants to win — and soon. Stanton has never been to the playoffs in his eight years with the Florida franchise and has never been a part of a winning team. With a starting rotation still in shambles and a weak farm system, it does not appear Stanton will be winning with the Marlins anytime soon.
The Marlins new ownership group, led by Derek Jeter, has a difficult decision on their hands with Stanton. The early years of his 13-year, $325-million contract were cheap, but it’s about to get expensive in a hurry. Stanton’s salary jumps from $14.5 million to $25 million next year and will escalate to $32 million by 2023 if he does not opt out after the 2020 season.
As difficult as it may be to part ways with a 59-homer bat like Stanton’s the Marlins will be forced to confront reality. Jeter’s group needs to be able to have a fresh start without the burdens of the largest contract in MLB history weighing them down. Stanton also deserves a fresh start with a winner.
The Red Sox won their second straight AL East title this year, but their lineup was sorely missing David Ortiz in the middle of the order. Boston needs a powerful presence at the plate to keep holding off the New York Yankees and Aaron Judge. Even with their big trades for Craig Kimbrel, Chris Sale and Drew Pomeranz, the Red Sox still have a deep enough farm system to make a fair offer for Stanton, who would do unspeakable things in Fenway Park and the AL East.
