With rivalries, conference foes and much more all in play, these five teams should be on upset alert in college football Week 7 for the 2017 season.
Upsets wasted little time getting started last week in the college football world. On Thursday night, Lamar Jackson and the Louisville Cardinals went to Raleigh, NC and couldn’t hang with an NC State Wolfpack team that we’ve been underrating all season. Thus, they dropped to 4-2 on the season and the stage for more upsets to come was set.
They didn’t come in droves, but they most certainly came. The Michigan Wolverines getting knocked off by Michigan State was a tough one to watch, especially with the situation at quarterback for Jim Harbaugh’s team. Meanwhile, the upsets of Utah (vs. Stanford) and Florida (vs. LSU) weren’t all that surprising given the quality of team and opponent in their matchups.
However, what was surprising was what happened to the Oklahoma Sooners. Not only did the No. 3-ranked team in the country fall, but they fall to Iowa State. Yes, that would be the same Cyclones who are perennially one of the absolute worst teams in the entire country. How that happens is completely unheard of, but speaks to just how wild things can get in this sport.
With that said, the upsets don’t stop here. There are plenty more to come in the 2017 college football season, starting in Week 7 and going through the rest of the year. With that in mind, let’s dive into the ranked teams that should be on upset alert on Saturday this week, starting in the Big Ten.
5. Michigan Wolverines
Rank: 17, Opponent: Indiana Hoosiers
Coming into the 2017 season, you’d be hard-pressed in Ann Arbor or anywhere else in the college football watching world that was ultimately inspired by the play of Michigan Wolverines quarterback Wilton Speight. With that being said, there are probably hundreds and thousands of fans crying for him at this point after watching John O’Korn last week. Michigan suffered their first loss of the season to rival Michigan State, thus hurting their title hopes immensely.

O’Korn wasn’t just bad in that game — he was a downright atrocity. The Houston transfer finished going 16-of-35 for 198 yards with three interceptions and no touchdown throws. As a result, the Wolverines offense scored only one touchdown in the contest, and that didn’t come until midway through the fourth quarter. Talk all about the conditions that you want, but rain doesn’t fully excuse an abysmal offense, and that’s what the Wolverines have with O’Korn.
The Indiana Hoosiers aren’t a great football team, but that’s not the point. they are a Big Ten squad who is capable of making plays at various spots on their roster. With that being said, the biggest factor is the Michigan offense. I just don’t think that they can score with O’Korn at the helm. Thus, they have to have an elite defensive performance to win. That’s possible against Indiana, but it makes things dicey.
