Eagles at Panthers: Highlights, score and recap

The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Carolina Panthers on Thursday Night Football, 28-23.

Thursday Night Football was tremendous this week, as the Philadelphia Eagles sneak out of Charlotte with a thrilling road victory over the Carolina Panthers, 28-23. The Panthers had multiple opportunities to take the lead late but could not execute well enough offensively to sink the Eagles in primetime.

Philadelphia improves to 5-1 on the season, while Carolina falls to 4-2. It was pretty simple in this game, as the quarterback that took better care of the football came out on top. After an early fumble in the first quarter, Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz would put together another solid game in his young NFL career. He completed 16 of 30 passes for 222 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

While he found pay dirt for the 51st time in his career on the ground, Carolina would have liked its quarterback, Cam Newton, to not be so careless with the football. Newton had three interceptions on the night to one passing touchdown to Christian McCaffrey late.

To be fair, Newton had ZERO help from his running backs on Thursday night. While he rushed for 71 yards on 11 carries, the rest of the offense combined for an atrocious nine yards on 14 carries. Jonathan Stewart should have had somebody play in his place, as he had eight carries for -4 yards.

We have to give credit to the Eagles’ front-seven, as it was terrific all night. The secondary made plays on the football but was a tad reckless with the occasional pass interference call or five.

Overall, Philadelphia looks to be one of the best teams in football and definitely the class of the NFC East. Carolina is still solid, but Newton’s accuracy issues and linebacker Luke Kuechly’s troubles with concussions are not going away. This was a great game and hopefully the rest of the Week 6 slate is this good.

1. Carson Wentz: Wentz completed 16 of 30 passes for 222 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He would have six carries for 25 yards on the ground.
2. Mychal Kendricks: Kendricks had 17 tackles, 12 solo and one for a loss of yardage.
3. Jalen Mills: Mills had four tackles, three solo, and an interception.

The Eagles will have 11 days to get ready for their next NFC East rivalry game. Philadelphia will play the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football in Week 7. Kickoff from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia will be at 8:30 p.m. ET on Oct. 23. ESPN will have the national broadcast.
