Miami tried to catch Georgia Tech off guard with a second-half onside kick and things did not go their way.

There are a lot of risky plays in the game of football and one of them is attempting an onside kick to start the second half. Sometimes, though, if you’re in a close game it’s worth it because if things do go in your favor, then you get some momentum on your side.

But then there is the worst-case scenario, that being the opposing team scooping the ball up and taking it to the house against minimal coverage. That really sucks. Just ask the Miami Hurricanes, because they had to deal with that misery on Saturday.

Miami went into the half with Georgia Tech up just 14-13 as they continue their quest to win the ACC, so Mark Richt figured it’d be a good idea to try and catch Paul Johnson’s crew off guard to get the final 30 minutes rolling. Well, it blew up in their face because Lamont Simmons of the Yellow Jackets scooped the ball up and proceeded to take it to the house for the 42-yard touchdown and the early second-half lead.

Hey, a risk is a risk. This very well could have gone the way of the Hurricanes, and again, if it did, then they maybe could have taken a 20-14 lead to put some momentum on their side. But as it turns out, the ball just took a horrible bounce and now Georgia Tech has everything working in its favor for the time being.

If Miami is to lose this game Saturday afternoon, then this will be a play that’s run over and over, especially if the Hurricanes happen to miss out on the ACC Coastal title at the end of the season.
