NLCS 2017: Five X-factors which will help Chicago Cubs defeat LA Dodgers
No. 2: Quintana Sets the Stage
The trade for Jose Quintana during the MLB All-Star break is likely the X-factor for the Chicago Cubs’ season. It was the spark the team needed to push through and win the NL Central. In his first game with the team, Quintana blanked the Baltimore Orioles, striking out 12 batters. It set the stage for the Cubs’ second half.

Though he is in his sixth year in the league, Quintana had never pitched in the playoffs until this season. He only allowed three hits and a run in 6.1 innings versus the Nationals. I’d say that stage is not too large for him.
That said, the game was at Wrigley Field. Earlier today, the team announced Quintana as their Game 1 starter for the NLCS. It is no surprise that the Dodgers are sending Kershaw to the mound. Quintana does need to match Kershaw pitch-for-pitch, but holding the Dodgers to a run or two will be crucial.
Quintana has faced the Dodgers in the past, but not since being with the Cubs. In two games, he allowed five unearned runs in 14 innings. It was his team’s defense that let him down. That should not happen with the Cubs, though they do have their moments.
With Quintana starting Game 1, it is likely he gets to face the Dodgers twice. He has the stuff to dominate. All he needs to do is hold the Dodgers at bay while the Cubs offense gets going.
