Aaron Rodgers injury: Fire up the Tony Romo to Packers hot takes

GREEN BAY, WI - DECEMBER 13: (L-R) Tony Romo
GREEN BAY, WI - DECEMBER 13: (L-R) Tony Romo

With Aaron Rodgers likely out for the season, there’s only one phone call that Ted Thompson should make — Tony Romo.

Let’s just dive right into this one. Everyone is going to have their Aaron Rodgers hot takes this week, and perhaps the hottest common take will be that Green Bay needs to sign Tony Romo.

This is the very situation that is tailor-made to coax Romo out of the CBS booth and back into the NFL — and it has all the makings of a classic football story.

Everyone remembers the “Dez Bryant Catch Game”, which is the memory that resonates most deeply when we think about Tony Romo. Now picture him coming back to the scene of that devastation to finally take the Super Bowl leap he never could with Dallas.

They don’t write movies like that anymore these days, so why not just act it out in real life?

When Romo retired this offseason and took a job with CBS, we all knew there could be a situation that might bring him back. That situation had to be perfect though; Miami or New York were not going to be able to bring Romo back.

But Green Bay, that’s different.

There will be a learning curve, but Romo has established with his work in the booth that he hasn’t lost a step as far as football I.Q. is concerned. In fact, his short time away from football might have made him smarter. We all listen in awe as he predicts plays like some NFL Nostrodomus, but that’s just proof that he’s as mentally fit to read defenses as he’s ever been.

Now apply that to what the Packers have to offer. Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb won’t miss a step with Romo throwing to them, and the running game could see a boom with the passing game staying on track.

Brett Favre came back for a victory lap season with the Vikings back in 2009, using the doubt so many had in him as fuel to torch the rest of the league with. He made Benard Berrian, Visanthe Shiancoe , and Sidney Rice into star receivers. Ty Montgomery has drawn comparisons to Percy Harvin, who had a phenomenal rookie year with Farve in Minnesota.

Lest we forget Kurt Warner taking the Cardinals to the Super Bowl in a totally unexpected career plot twist. It’s also worth noting that Romo is from Wisconsin and grew up rooting for the Packers, which surely doesn’t hurt the idea of him joining rank.

All the pieces are there to make Romo-to-Green Bay work. There are variables like Romo’s health and how quickly he can pick up a system six weeks into the season. But at the end of the day, the Packers are ready to win the Super Bowl now, with or without Rodgers.

Who better to help them out than a guy equally looking to win a Super Bowl and polish off what would be a sure-fire Hall of Fame career?
