ESPN College Pick Em Week 8: Boomer Sooner!

I only had 30 points in Pick Em last week, which was my worst week in a very long time. Only two people in the group has a lower total than that. Putting too many points on Auburn and San Diego State doomed my picks. This week looks much easier, but looks can be deceiving.

More from College Football Odds

Fun facts for week 7: TCU and Ohio State performed clean sweeps.  For the second straight week, we had a clean sweep for San Diego State in a loss! Gamebreaker_boz was the only one who put less than five points on that one.

BrianPrete led the group with 47 points this week, which was five more than anyone else. He missed Auburn, but only had two points on it. The only other one he missed was San Diego State.

Gamebreaker_boz took over the top spot in the league again with 316 total points. That puts him four ahead of pitt2534 and six ahead of mnsooners and SDShelton. My terrible week dropped me all the way to eighth.

These picks will be for the confidence version of the game, where you assign a point value from 1-10 based on how confident you are in each pick.

CINCINNATI, OH – OCTOBER 07: Head coach Scott Frost of the UCF Knights looks on against the Cincinnati Bearcats during the second half at Nippert Stadium on October 7, 2017 in Cincinnati, Ohio. (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images) /

(1) Florida State over Louisville:

Lamar Jackson makes too many mistakes to come out of this one with a win. Florida State’s defense has done a really good job considering the growing pains of the offense. James Blackman is finally comfortable running this offense, and the FSU defense is going to make Jackson make a couple of key mistakes at critical times.

(2) Notre Dame over USC:

Sam Darnold rebounded from three early fumbles in a way that still has him at the top of draft boards. He threw all over the Utah defense in the last three quarters, and didn’t make another mistake. Is this a turning point for Darnold and the Trojans? The emergence of Vaughns has helped Darnold, but I still think that Josh Adams is going to be too much for the USC defense. The Domers win a close one.

(3) Texas Tech over Iowa State:

Iowa State has opened a new door on offense with Jacob Park out. The team isn’t going to hurry him back because Kempt has done a solid job leading this team. The Iowa State defense is also an underrated unit and could give the Red Raiders some problems. I fully expect a Tech win though.

(4) Mississippi State over Kentucky:

The Bulldogs are very tough at home, and Kentucky has yet to really play a game that solidifies their status as a SEC East contender. This is a key game in Starkville. Kentucky had all sorts of problems with Drew Lock and Missouri. Nick Fitzgerald is essentially a more talented version of Lock. The Wildcats have no answer for him.

(5) Central Florida over Navy:

UCF isn’t just winning games, they are destroying opponents. This team has a lot of talent on both sides of the ball, and they have proven that they can stop the run. As we saw last week, Navy is in trouble if they have to rely on their passing game. Navy will score some points and hang around, but they aren’t much of a threat to win.

(6) Oklahoma State over Texas:

The Cowboys can stop the run just like their in-state rivals can. Texas still can’t throw to win, so I see the Longhorns fading in the second half. The Texas defense is good enough to make things interesting and to keep Mason Rudolph from doing whatever he wants, but I don’t see the Texas offense moving the ball well enough to win.

(7) Boise State over Wyoming:

If the Broncos can take down the Aztecs in San Diego, they should have no issues disposing of Wyoming on the Smurf Turf. This could get ugly.

(8) Penn State over Michigan:

Opposing defenses have keyed on John O’Korn and made him make a ton of mistakes in the last two weeks. Penn State’s defense could be better than both Indiana and Michigan State combined. The Wolverines are going to frustrate Saquon Barkley, but lost in all of the Barkley hype is how good Trace McSorley is at not making mistakes. Penn State doesn’t beat themselves, and Michigan doesn’t have the offense to take care of it themselves.

(9) San Diego State over Fresno State:

The Bulldogs thrashed a pretty good New Mexico team last week, but trying to stop the Aztecs is going to be a much more difficult task. I still don’t think Fresno’s defense is all that great. Penny and company should run wild here.

(10) Oklahoma over Kansas State:

The Sooners’ bugaboo is pass defense, and the Wildcats are the worst passing team in the conference. Yes, even worse than Kansas. Oklahoma has done a pretty good job this year against the run overall and running quarterbacks too. K-State doesn’t have the firepower to keep up or the secondary to stop the Oklahoma offense.
