Texas finish vs Oklahoma State leaves fans with a broken heart (Video)
The Texas Longhorns suffered yet another heartbreaking loss with a brutal self-inflicted blow in overtime against No. 10 Oklahoma State on Saturday.
It’s been a tough debut season for Tom Herman with the Texas Longhorns, and another last-second loss on Saturday isn’t going to make things any better.
The Herman era got off to a horrible start with a stunning 51-41 home loss to Maryland, leading to some wild overreactions about Texas’ high-profile coaching hire. Texas has played much better since, but a double-overtime defeat at USC and close loss to rival Oklahoma will be viewed as major missed opportunities.
Saturday’s 13-10 overtime loss to No. 10 Oklahoma State may have been the most heartbreaking result for Herman in Austin yet. The Longhorns defense battled valiantly against arguably the top offense in college football for four quarters, and held Oklahoma State to a field goal in the first overtime to set up a potential game-winning drive.
Down three points and facing a short third down inside the 10-yard line, Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger unwisely floated a pass up for grabs in the end zone. Ramon Richards came down with the interception to deal the Longhorns a third crushing loss for the season.
While it’s hard to place too much blame on a true freshman quarterback who had taken a number of brutal hits all afternoon, Ehlinger obviously needs to be more aware of the game situation there. If Ehlinger throws the ball out of the end zone, the Longhorns would likely have been able to hit the short field goal to send the game to double overtime and give his defense another chance.
Texas will presumably improve quickly under Herman and be competing for Big 12 championships soon enough, but the deflating losses have to be weighing on the Longhorns at this point.
