Who is Eddie Jackson, the Chicago Bears rookie and defensive TD hero?

If you’re watching the Bears-Panthers game, you may be wondering who’s wearing No. 39. Allow us to introduce you to Eddie Jackson.

Eddie Jackson, Chicago Bears 2017 fourth-round pick, 112th overall, out of Alabama, is having himself a day. (Let’s be clear though: This rookie safety is not to be confused with the former NFL cornerback and Master Chef contestant of the same name who played in the league between 2004 and 2008.)

Jackson has chalked up two defensive touchdowns with eight minutes left in the first half, the first time a player has had two defensive TD in a game since Titans LB Zach Brown in Week 17 all the way back in 2012. In Chicago history, Jackson’s 75-yard fumble recovery was the longest touchdown by a Bears rookie since 1951.

At Alabama, from where he graduated, Jackson broke his leg in the eighth week of the 2016 season his senior year, which led to his drop in the draft and ultimate selection by Chicago. The rookie is from Lauderdale Lakes, Florida originally. His Wikipedia page already reflects Sunday’s 75-yard FR touchdown and 76-yard INT touchdown.

Per the ESPN Stats and Info, Jackson is also the first player to return both a fumble and interception for a touchdown in the same game since 2007, when Antonio Cromartie did so in Week 8

Where’s all this coming from? Who is to say. Some Twitter theorists suggest Jackson, again, an Alabama pick, was just waiting until he faced an Auburn QB to really show off. (Panthers quarterback Cam Newton infamously played at Auburn.) That’s a good theory.
