Star Trek: Discovery is a hit and has already been renewed for a second season.

Star Trek: Discovery didn’t have an easy launch. There were multiple delays, pushed back premiere dates, fan controversy and the loss of showrunner Bryan Fuller. It’s a bit of a tradition with Star Trek that the series have to struggle to get on the air. Star Trek: The Original Series needed two pilots and the help of Lucile Ball to finally make it.

Luckily, great reviews and a successful stream of new subscribers at CBS All Access means that Star Trek: Discovery won’t have to fight to get a second season. We are just now halfway through season 1 of Discovery and the show has already been greenlit for season 2.

The Star Trek writers room decided to use one of Captain Lorca’s fortune cookies to spread the news.

Meanwhile Star Trek: Discovery producer Aaron Baiers was even less subtle. What I wouldn’t give to see what’s in that binder.

What we don’t know is what the timetable for the second season will be, or what kind of show we might have on our hands. Rumor has it that originally Bryan Fuller wanted Discovery to be an anthology. Fuller wanted to have multiple ships, perhaps all named Discovery, at different points in the Star Trek timeline. Will season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery follow that template, or will we stay with the ship and crew we have now? We will just have to wait and see.

If we do stick with the ship and crew we have now, it may end up being a very different feeling group anyway. Star Trek: Discovery hasn’t shied away from killing off major characters, and as the war with the Klingons continues to intensify, more casualties can be expected. I just hope my favorites make it to the end. I’m already attached to Tilly and Saru after all.

We also don’t know when we will see a second season, but it’s probably safe to say it will be late 2018 or early 2019. Discovery finished the first season just in time and obviously a second season has to be written and then produced.

Last week’s episode of Star Trek: Discovery was the best one yet in our opinion so another season of DISCO is really exciting news. Can you imagine how much the Trekkies will howl if the Romulans get a redesign as drastic as the one the Klingons got?

No matter what the future holds, Star Trek: Discovery is destined to live long and prosper.
