Tennessee star running back John Kelly was cited for drug possession, which may cause him to miss the game against Kentucky this weekend

The Tennessee Volunteers football team has had a downright miserable season this year but one of the lone bright spots for the team has been running back John Kelly and the way he’s performed. Well, as the Volunteers look to finally get another win this Saturday against Kentucky, it looks like they might be without the services of their star running back.

As first reported by WATE-6 in Knoxville, Kelly was part of a traffic stop on Tuesday night, and during that stop, he and linebacker Will Ignont were cited with misdemeanor drug possession. When officers sensed an odor coming from the vehicle, a search was conducted where marijuana and paraphernalia were found. Both Kelly and Ignont must turn themselves into booking at the Knox County Sheriff’s Office by Nov. 7.

While the rest of the Tennessee offense has played underwhelmingly, Kelly has not been part of that distinction. The junior from Detroit has rushed for 615 yards on 125 carries for six touchdowns while also proving to be one of the more bruising, physical backs in the country. At times, he has been the one breath that has kept this Volunteers offense alive during this horrid season.

But, while it has not been announced by the school as of yet, you’d have to assume that Kelly will be suspended for Tennessee’s game on Saturday against Kentucky in Lexington. This, of course, lowers the Vols’ chances that much more to end their current losing streak, which currently sits at three games after losses to Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama.

The Tennessee program has acknowledged the incident occurred, but at this time, they’re choosing to provide no further comment on the matter.
