Josh Rosen

Quarterback, UCLA

The San Francisco 49ers benched Brian Hoyer last weekend, bringing in 2017 draft pick C.J. Beathard to take over as the team’s starting quarterback. In his first start of his career against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 7, Beathard did not do much to impress, leaving the door wide open for someone else to come in and take over as the team’s future at the position. If the 49ers do not go out and grab Kirk Cousins to team with head coach Kyle Shanahan in 2018, they may look to fill the position via the draft.

If Darnold is off the board, another Pac-12 quarterback will likely be the next selection next April. Josh Rosen of UCLA, like Darnold, has struggled with the turnovers this season, and his UCLA Bruins have been one of the more inconsistent teams in the conference. He also has some eligibility left, but all signs point to him leaving school early and making himself eligible for the 2018 NFL Draft.

The 49ers need to get it right in April, as they cannot afford to trot out sub par quarterbacks each week. Sure, Beathard may wind up being a very good quarterback in the NFL, but Shanahan is not going to wait around and hope for that to happen. The organization may roll the dice on a player like Rosen, who not only has shown he can make all the throws at the collegiate level but has the kind of grit you look for from a player you want to lead your organization for the next ten seasons.
