If there is a special guest referee for the Brock Lesnar vs. Jinder Mahal match at WWE Survivor Series, it should definitely be John Cena

Sixteen-time WWE World Champion John Cena may be out filming a movie right now, reportedly for the Transformers franchise, but he’s not out of WWE’s booking ideas at all. According to The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer, there may already Survivor Series plans for Cena involving him in the Brock Lesnar vs. Jinder Mahal match at the event, which happens to be the top champion vs. champion match on the card. Lesnar will represent WWE Raw as the WWE Universal Champion while Jinder Mahal represents Smackdown Live as the WWE Champion.

Obviously, the company loves doing big matches, and it goes without saying that this is pretty huge. The respective world champions from opposite brands have not faced one another in a while when it comes to 1-on-1 matches against the other. This makes the WWE Champion vs. Universal Champion match mean more.

However, Mahal vs. Lesnar does not scream box office as much as creative would hope. This is why Vince McMahon clearly could make the match all the more intriguing by adding Cena to the mix as special guest referee. It makes sense. The event takes place live on the WWE Network on Nov. 19, which is pretty good timing to include John Cena, who would be getting close to finishing up his commitments for the new movie he’s starring in.

There are a number of reasons why Cena should be considered for this spot at Survivor Series. First and foremost, Cena is one of the last few guaranteed draws for WWE. While the company would hope others could do better, that’s just simply not so. Attendance numbers and television viewership is also down without him not on camera weekly as the top man. So really, any use of him at this point is huge for the company.

If that isn’t enough, Cena has wrestled both Mahal and Lesnar in the past. He knows both very well in the ring, and from a kayfabe perspective, he can know what to expect over a normal referee. Let us also not forget there isn’t a referee in WWE today that works both brands consistently, meaning there could be “ref bias” — at least for the story, anyway.

Not where John Cena is concerned. This big and strong dude, who could control this match better than others, is also not on either roster. He’s a free agent, remember? This makes him impartial over the normal refs. Lest we forget, he’s also still a top performer who can handle both men.

And, let’s be honest, John Cena is a 16-time world champion, which ties him with the great two-time WWE Hall of Famer, Ric Flair. He wants a 17th world title reign and has made that clear in promos this past year. We cannot avoid that he’s chasing the record, and since Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns looks like the match we will see for the WWE Universal Title at WrestleMania 34, guess whose championship is probably open for the taking.

Yes, Mahal could be the target for Cena because Jinder holds the key to the record. Cena’s addition as referee may be due to all the things above, but the real reason will surely be that the man you can’t see wants to win another world title. His time as the ref at Survivor Series would plant the seeds for that match, which could take place as early the Royal Rumble PPV.
