Apparently, the top brass at the University of Florida is trying to figure out if they could fire Jim McElwain without having to hand him buyout money
To say things are not going well between the University of Florida and head football coach Jim McElwain at the moment is a huge understatement. This was magnified on Saturday when a report surfaced that he may no longer have a job soon, which led to the school immediately denying that was the case.
Well, right as the Gators and McElwain are getting trounced by the rival Georgia Bulldogs in Jacksonville, there’s some new information regarding this whole situation. It seems as if the Gators administration is, in fact, trying to get rid of the head coach, while saving some money in the process.
According to Mark Schlabach of ESPN, administrators are looking into whether or not they could fire McElwain with cause, which means they would not have to give him the $12.9 million buyout he’d normally be owed. Paying McElwain that large buyout has been talked about a lot in regards to the school parting ways with its head coach.
Of course, all of this stems from the drama that took place this week. McElwain made a claim that his team and family have received death threats, but when the school went to look into this serious matter even further, McElwain was unable to elaborate on it. Naturally, this was a huge red flag that some fabrication was maybe done here on the part of the Gators head man.
This situation is still developing, but if the school is going to show him the door, then you can’t blame them for finding a way to do it without having to cut a massive check in the process.
