49ers release quarterback Brian Hoyer after trading for Jimmy Garoppolo

The San Francisco 49ers have parted ways with Brian Hoyer after they acquired Jimmy Garoppolo via trade with the New England Patriots.

Earlier Monday evening, the San Francisco 49ers traded a 2018 second-round NFL draft pick to the New England Patriots in exchange for their backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Now, the 49ers are releasing their backup quarterback Brian Hoyer, who they only just acquired this past offseason, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Hoyer has been quite the journeyman over his nine-year NFL career that ironically began back in 2009 with the New England Patriots. After spending three years with the team, he has played for five different teams in the six seasons that have followed that.

Seeing as how his statistics over the course of his career aren’t starter-worthy but aren’t exactly prohibitive, the 32-year-old could very well end up being signed as a backup quarterback by another team in the near future. Could we see him play for his seventh different team in the last seven seasons this year, or will he return to one of his former teams, perhaps the Arizona Cardinals or the Cleveland Browns?

After a lousy start to the team’s sixth game of the season, Hoyer was benched by the 49ers, and they brought in rookie CJ Beathard to replace him. Following four straight two or three-point losses for the 49ers under Hoyer, Beathard brought the team within two points of defeating the Washington Redskins.

After that game, he was officially named the team’s starting quarterback moving forward, and Hoyer had not started or played in a game since, so when the 49ers traded for Jimmy Garoppolo, it was not a surprise to see Hoyer once again end up as a free agent.

Through eight games this season, of which the 49ers have still won a grand total of zero, Hoyer had started six of them and thrown for 1,245 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions with a 58.0 percent completion percentage. He also ran for seven yards and a touchdown on five carries.
