The Anaheim Ducks have placed Ryan Getzlaf on the injured reserve list today after he took a puck to the face in Sunday’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes. He will not play for the rest of the week and will be re-evaluated on Monday.
Getzlaf, 32, has only played in six games so far this season, scoring one goal and tallying six assists so far. He missed the first two games of the season due to injury and then another three from Oct. 13-20 with a lower body injury.
Getzlaf hasn’t played a full season of hockey since the 2011-12 season, which is also one of only two full seasons he has ever played. He played 74 games last season after playing 77 in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15.
The Ducks, who are 6-4-1 on the season, have scored 34 goals on the season, good for 17th in the NHL currently. They are in need of any help in offense, so losing Getzlaf to injury once again is a big blow.
The Ducks are also in need of help on the man advantage, only operating at 12.1 percent on the season. While Getzlaf doesn’t generally score many goals, he has had 50-plus assists in three of the last four seasons. The only one he didn’t have 50-plus, he had 45.

The Ducks have not released a timetable on his return, and there isn’t likely going to be any updates on that until next week after he is re-evaluated.
This is the play that effectively put Getzlaf on the injured reserve list:
As shown in the video, Getzlaf is skating in front of the Carolina net looking to redirect the puck. However, before the puck gets to him it takes a deflection off a Hurricanes defenseman’s stick, redirecting into Getzlaf’s face.
