2. Brian Lewerke has been outstanding

Brian Lewerke has done a great job at the quarterback spot for the Spartans this season. The sophomore out of Arizona has done a great job of not trying to do too much and taking unnecessary risks with the football.

As a result, he’s been able to protect the football quite well. Still, he’s had his games where he’s put up some big yards as well. Against Penn State, Lewerke finished the day with 400 yards through the air in the win.

It’s the second week in a row that Lewerke has had 400 or more yards through the air. His success through the air, makes life easier for his running game. That will be necessary to their success next week as well.

With a quarterback that keeps the ball in his team’s possession and the ability to move it, Michigan State is well prepped for some of the big defenses they’ll be facing soon. They have Ohio State next and their crop of tremendous secondary players.

If they can upset the Buckeyes, then they’ll likely get Wisconsin in the conference title game. That will be another great test for Mark Dantonio’s quarterback. So far, he’s looked like a natural under center for the Spartans.
