Borussia Dortmund host Bayern Munich in Der Klassiker on Saturday, in the battle of Germany’s two most successful clubs. Dortmund and Bayern have combined to win 20 of the past 23 Bundesliga titles. However, the clubs have been trending in opposite directions lately. Since firing Carlo Ancelotti, Bayern Munich have seen their season take off under Jupp Heynckes. Bayern have moved passed Dortmund and are first in the Bundesliga and have qualified for the round of 16 in Champions League. Dortmund started the season on fire, picking up 19 points in their first seven games. However, Peter Bosz’s club have only picked up one point in their last three games and have seen their Champions League hopes took a major hit after drawing two games with Apoel Nicosia.

Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored 10 goals this season and has a history of scoring big goals against Bayern. Peter Bosz has successfully rotated wingers alongside Aubameyang, starting Christian Pulisic, Maximilian Philipp, and Andrey Yarmolenko. However, Dortmund’s biggest problem lately has been their defense. Dortmund kept clean sheets in their first five games of the season but have allowed nine goals in their last three games.

Despite not having a healthy striker, Bayern defeated Celtic 2-1 to advance to the Champions League knockout stage. James Rodriguez started at striker as Heynckes changed his formation from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-3-3 for the first time since taking over as manager. Thomas Muller and Franck Ribery will miss the next few weeks but Robert Lewandowski could play on Saturday. The Polish striker missed Tuesday’s Champions League match after suffering a muscle strain in Bayern’s win over RB Leipzig.
