West Ham 1-4 Liverpool: Premier League highlights and recap
Liverpool beat West Ham 4-1 at London Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 4. Here are all the highlights from the match.
Liverpool overcame their struggles away from home to hold off West Ham’s brief comeback attempt at the London Stadium and run out comfortable 4-1 winners, moving back into the top six in the process.
The Reds, playing a very fluid 4-2-4 with Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum in midfield, struggled to establish any possession in the opening 20 minutes, and almost fell behind in the ninth minute, when Andre Ayew poked Manuel Lanzini’s deflected pass onto the post.
There were reasons for Slaven Bilic, under growing pressure after a poor start to the season, to be pleased with his side’s start, but the speed with which they collapsed was indicative of how low on confidence these players are.
The collapse started in the 22nd minute, when Edmilson Fernandes made an awful attempt at a challenge on Sadio Mane following a West Ham corner. Fernandes’ missed tackle left Aaron Cresswell isolated at the back, and Mane ran 60 yards with the ball before passing to Mohamed Salah for an easy finish.
Liverpool’s second was another gift. Salah’s corner was flicked on by Mane at the front post, before taking a deflection of West Ham’s Mark Noble. Joe Hart reacted well to keep the initial deflection out, but his save landed at the feet of Joel Matip, who tapped in to make it 2-0.
West Ham introduced Andy Carroll for Fernandes at halftime, and pulled a goal back within 10 minutes of the restart. Lanzini expertly controlled Andre Ayew’s cross, before lifting a wonderfully measured finish past Simon Mignolet.
The goal should have given West Ham hope, but they fell two behind almost immediately. Roberto Firmino took an excellent touch in midfield before driving 20 yards with ball and setting up Oxalde-Chamberlain, who saw his initial shot saved but turned in the rebound.
Liverpool put the result beyond doubt in the 75th minute through Salah, who drilled a low finish past Hart after good work from Mane.
