Juventus look to keep pace with league-leaders Napoli against last-place Benevento this weekend. This is matchday 12’s biggest mismatch and one of the biggest this fall. Not only are Benevento last in the 20-team table, they’re also winless with zero points. It’s a classic David versus Goliath matchup … and Goliath will no doubt win.
Juventus, despite some of their hiccups this season, have the better defense, better midfield and better frontline. After playing Sporting Lisbon to a 1-1 draw this past Tuesday (a result that hampered their ability to qualify early for the round of 16), Juve need not press the panic button just yet. That’s exactly what winger Juan Cuadrado called for after the latest Champions League misstep.
“But we need to stay calm. The result is still positive. Now we need to go and win the next one,” he told the club’s official website. “When you play a lot of games, you start to feel that fatigue. But that should not be an excuse. We need to remember that we’re a strong side who can get results.”
Playing Benevento will be the right sort of medicine to cure this inconsistent side. Defenders Giorgio Chiellini and Mattia De Sciglio appear to be back in top form and the midfield, where Alex Sandro and Miralem Pjanic have shown lots of pace and power, will need to continue imposing its game. It’s something that will be easy against a side such as Benevento. However, such a weak opponent could also be the time for Juventus coach Masimiliano Allegri to give playing time to players who have seen very little of the field this season, such as Douglas Costa.
“All we needed to do is win here [in Lisbon] and we would have qualified. Unfortunately, we are a side that sometimes fears winning,” Allegri told Italian TV network Mediaset Premium after the Sporting game. “Now everything remains wide open. It will be anyone’s game against Barcelona and playing in Athens [against Olimpiacos] could be an inferno. Now in Serie A we need to have respect for Benevento and defeat them.”
The Juventus attack also needs to regain some consistency and not appear paralyzed going forward. If Juve are aiming for a lopsided victory, then Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain could be the ones to run roughshod against a team that have given up a staggering 29 goals in just 11 games.
Benevento have experienced their own problems. A recent coaching change and inability to even get a point have plagued a team in their first-ever season in the Italian top flight. While promotion from Serie B brought joy to fans at the end of last season, the inevitable slide back into the second division has brought with it frustration. Relegation is hard for any team to swallow, especially after such a poor start.
