Top 50 sports franchises in the world
By Brad Weiss
In 1960, Lamar Hunt established a football team called the Dallas Texans, and since then, his fingerprints are all over what we now call the NFL. The Texans were an AFL team, and in 1963, they relocated to Kansas City. In 1970, the now Kansas City Chiefs joined the National Football League, and would be a dominant figure in the league right from the start.
Coming off of three AFL titles, including the last one in 1969, the Chiefs were already known thanks to their win against the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. In Dallas, the franchise shared the Cotton Bowl with the Cowboys, but have played inside Arrowhead Stadium since 1972. That stadium is a very tough place to play for opposing teams, giving the Chiefs an unquestioned advantage every time they take the field.
Since their inception, the Chiefs have become a $2 billion franchise, and have put together nine division championships. They have run the AFC West over the past two seasons, and in 2017, they have a chance to get back to a Super Bowl, thanks to an extremely talented roster on both sides of the ball. Kansas City’s original owner, Mr. Hunt, is actually credited for naming the Super Bowl, as he got the idea from watching his kids play with a toy called Super Ball.
For a franchise that produced the likes of Len Dawson and Derrick Thomas, it is safe to say their link to the history of the NFL is safe. Maybe they tack on another title this season, or maybe they don’t, but either way, this is definitely one of the premier organizations in the NFL right now.
