2. Pat Fitzgerald

If there’s someone that epitomizes Northwestern football, it is Fitzgerald. He played linebacker at the school in the mid-90’s, and he has been coaching there is some capacity since 2001 and as head coach since 2006.

The Wildcats are 7-3 this season, with an 84-65 record under Fitzgerald over his nearly 12 seasons. They are bowl eligible for the eight time in his tenure, and assured of a .500 or better record for the eighth time under Fitzgerald as well.

It would surely take a very unique opportunity for Fitzgerald to even think about leaving his alma mater. There are no college jobs which are in line to be open that qualify as that, at least at first glance. But the NFL would be a step up and a hard thing to turn down immediately, if a team wanted to interview him.

The Bengals are not necessarily a cutting edge organization. But uncovering head coaching candidates who will work for what they’ll pay and will see an opportunity should lead to the college stone being turned over, and they may find Fitzgerald.
