Who directed Justice League? Meet the Justice League director who stepped behind the camera to helm the DC Comics superhero team-up spectacular.

Who directed Justice League? It’s not who you might think. Well, it is, but not entirely, as the upcoming DC Comics blockbuster has a bit of a story when it comes to who was sitting behind the camera.

Zack Snyder is the credited Justice League director, and indeed he was the man hired for the job after his work on the first two DC Extended Universe films, the Superman stand-alone Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Snyder started shooting the film in April 2016, and stayed with it all the way through the end of principal photography. But just over a year later, in May 2017 during post-production, Snyder announced that he was stepping down from the blockbuster for a heartbreaking reason: his daughter Autumn had died. That’s a terrible tragedy, and far more important than any movie.

So what was Warner Bros. to do in Snyder’s absence? They turned to a familiar face to anyone who loves comic-book movies: Joss Whedon. The director of Marvel‘s own superhero team-up flick, The Avengers, had already been hired by Snyder for his screenwriting talents and was doing some rewrites on Justice League. Whedon stepped up as the Justice League director for reshoots and finished Zack Snyder’s movie.

But you won’t see a co-directing bill when the credits roll. Joss Whedon is only being credited as a screenwriter on the finished picture, while Zack Snyder retains the sole director’s credit.

So when you ask who directed Justice League, the answer is not just one blockbuster director, but two.
