Justice League is set to be released on Thursday, but who is Mera?

One of the more interesting characters that we have seen a glimpse of for the upcoming Justice League movie is Mera, an underwater being who appears for a moment in one of the trailers fighting the Parademons.

In the comics, Mera is the queen of an underwater world who is usurped and then aided by Aquaman in an attempt to take back her throne. She decides to return to Atlantis rather than become queen once again.

She is also the wife of Aquaman in the comics, so, for those of you who were hoping for an Aquaman romance plotline in Justice League, you’re probably out of luck.

The good news for those of you that were hoping for some on-screen romance time with Jason Mamoa is that he’s Aquaman so I’m sure we will see him shirtless. I mean, Henry Cavill took off his shirt a couple of times in Man of Steel, and I had to go to the gym and work out because I felt so inadequate. Mamoa is so ripped I’m going to have to start doing steroids.

Jokes aside, Mera might not play a major role in Justice League – but that’s okay.

Mera’s appearance in Justice League is important because it signifies the eventual Aquaman film. It makes me think of Spider-Man’s inclusion in the Marvel film Captain America: Civil War. The appearance of Spider-Man was a part of the movie, but, all in all, it was more of an Easter Egg that gave a brief glimpse into the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I’m also curious as to whether she is defending Atlantis or her dimension because it could give us a hint as to the plot of Aquaman.

Either way, I’m excited about both Justice League and Aquaman to see more of this character. Justice League hits theaters on Nov. 17, while Aquaman does not come out until December of next year.
