Nick Saban has a vendetta against ripped jeans, cracks himself up

In a press conference on Wednesday, Nick Saban opened by cracking himself up over ripped jeans.

When you coach the No. 1 college football team in the country, sometimes it is hard to escape talking about football. Saban, like many other coaches, has gotten really good at dodging tough questions or lightening the mood during press conferences sometimes. Although they are few and far between, Saban has had some lighthearted press conference moments at times.  Seriously, there are some terrific YouTube compilations of funny Saban moments. This instance will surely be added.

Thankfully for the journalists in this room, they caught Saban in a good mood on Wednesday, and it was because of ripped jeans. Seriously, ripped jeans — of all the possible things to rant about? Saban mentions being confused as to how “we got here” with regards to the popularity of ripped jeans. He probably speaks for most people when he expresses his confusion.

This serves as a reminder that Saban is a normal human being, just like the rest of us. Sometimes these coaches and players get put on a pedestal and are revered, but in reality, they have quirks just like everyone else. I guess Saban’s newest pet peeve is ripped jeans because he surely gets a kick out of it.

His contagious laughter caught on as the rest of the room joined him in laughing at the silliness that is worn out jeans being fashionable. Quite a way to start a press conference, unique if nothing else.

With a game against 5-5 Mercer this weekend, things are likely as stress-free as they can be for Saban. Not to say there isn’t stress because, well, that’s self-explanatory. Yet still, Saban’s odd rant about his disdain for ripped jeans is just another segment in his highlight reel of odd responses. Another day in the life for coach Saban, in the spotlight, just for a different reason than normal.
