This was supposed to be a celebration for Manchester United, who welcomed Paul Pogba back to the starting XI after a 12 game absence, and after a temporary blip in the first half, so it eventually proved.

Pogba got a goal and an assist on his return, Romelu Lukaku ended his seven-game goal drought and United ran out deserved 4-1 winners to put their 1-0 loss to Chelsea before the last international break immediately and emphatically behind them.

As dominant as the win turned out to be, Jose Mourinho’s side struggled early on. The Magpies, lining up in a 4-4-2 with Dwight Gayle and Joselu up front, were dangerous on the break, and took the lead in the 14th minute, Gayle sweeping in a tidy finish following good work from DeAndre Yedlin down the right.

The Red Devils’ immediate response wasn’t exactly furious, but they dominated possession and territory and deserved their equalizer in the 37th minute. Pogba proved his worth again with a wonderful assist, teasing Jacob Murphy on the right wing before standing up a wonderful cross to the back post, where Anthony Martial finished well with his head.

From there, United took charge. They went ahead on the stroke of halftime through Chris Smalling, who headed in an excellent Ashley Young cross at the back post, and could have had a penalty shortly before after Lukaku appeared to have his shirt pulled in the box.

Pogba’s goal, a tap in at the back post following Marcus Rashford’s deft cushioned header, sealed the result in the 50th minute, and the Frenchmen was substituted to a standing ovation after 70 minutes.

To cap a big day for United, Lukaku got his first goal in eight matches with an emphatic finish into the roof of the net, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic came off the bench to make his first appearance for the club since sustaining a serious knee injury at the end of last season.
