Sampdoria host defending Serie A champions Juventus on Sunday, Nov. 19 at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium in Genoa. Here’s what you need to know before you watch.

The wounds of failing to reach the World Cup still fresh, Juventus and Sampdoria square off on Sunday in another crucial Serie A match. Juventus, in second place just a point behind Napoli, travel to Genoa to take on a Sampdoria side currently in sixth and vying for a spot in a European competition.

There are several Juve players who were in the starting lineup Monday during Italy’s ill-fated quest to reach Russia 2018. Among the most-notable are goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and veteran center-backs Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli. These players will need to shake off that emotional defeat and refocus on their efforts on the club season. There is still lots to play for in Serie A and the Champions League. Both Buffon and Barzagli, members of the Italy side that won the 2006 World Cup, announced their international retirements after the 1-0 aggregate loss to Sweden.

Like most big clubs, Juventus are always looking to see what players they can buy up on the international transfer market. The team’s front office have identified three star players to strengthen their squad, according to the Italian sports daily Tuttosport, such as Emre Can of Liverpool and Faouzi Ghoulam of Napoli. Both of these players’ contracts expire at the end of this season. The most ambitious target, however, is Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, a young player who would only bolster Juve’s midfield.

But the Old Lady can only worry about the players it currently has on the roster when it faces Sampdoria, a team that has overachieved over the past weeks. Juve will again look to the Argentine duo of Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain to score the goals, while hoping the backline, anchored by the center back team of Chiellini and Bonucci, can stop the flow of goals.

Sampdoria find themselves pushing for a Champions League spot and will be looking to get a win at home. Veteran striker Fabio Quagliarella, who played with Juventus and won three league titles with the club, leads Sampdoria in scoring this season with seven goals. The 34-year-old center forward is the one Juve’s defense will look to smother.

The Juve backline is likely to have a busy outing. Sampdoria have a collection of players capable of giving Juventus a difficult time, including striker Duvan Zapata. The Colombian-born striker, on loan to the Genoa-based club this season from Napoli, has tallied four goals in eight matches so far in this campaign.
