Napoli may be flying high in Serie A, but the Italian club faces a must-win scenario in its Champions League ‘s Group F encounter against Shakhtar Donetsk at what is expected to be a packed and very loud Stadio San Paolo.

After losing 2-1 to Shakhtar in Ukraine and dropping both their matches against Manchester City, Napoli have to win Tuesday to keep their hopes alive of advancing to the knockout stage. For the Ukrainian champions, a draw is enough to get them through to the final 16. With two matchdays left to play, Shakhtar are currently second with nine points, while Napoli are third with just three. Their lone win came at home against Dutch side Feyenoord.

It’s difficult to get past the reality that Napoli, currently in first place in Italy, are focused on winning the Serie A title. While Maurizio Sarri’s side have been playing some of the best soccer on the continent, their twin defeats to Manchester City were an example of how they still have a way to go in order to compete with Europe’s stronger clubs.

But Napoli are no slouch. They feature the best Italian player at the moment in winger Lorenzo Insigne, while Belgian international Dries Mertens leads the team with 11 goals in all competitions. It will be the first game at Champions League level for Insigne after Italy failed to reach the World Cup for the first time in 60 years. Insigne sat on the bench for Italy’s 0-0 draw against Sweden in Milan last Monday, a decision many criticized and one of the many reasons head coach Giampiero Ventura was unable to lead his side to the World Cup finals. As a result, Insigne will be among some of the best players who will miss out on Russia 2018 this summer.

As for Napoli, the team has been solid across the field with defender Kalidou Koulibaly, midfielders Jorginho and Marek Hamsik as well as forward Jose Callejon all key for the Partenopei during the early part of this season. But Insigne, above all, has been the player who has spearheaded this Napoli side, scoring the opening goal this past Saturday at home in a 2-1 victory against struggling AC Milan.

Shakhtar Donetsk, meanwhile, are a team few people would have predicted would be in this position at this juncture of the group stage. Coached by second-year manager Paolo Foneseca, Shakhtar won the Ukrainian league and cup double last season. While their roster has not typically featured international stars, Shakhtar have often played the role of spoiler. They won the Europa League in 2009 and reached the quarterfinals of the Champions League during the 2010-11 season, the club’s best finish to date in that competition.

Shakhtar Donetsk do have some players of note, some even fearing they could lose a few of their prized pieces to bigger clubs as early as the January transfer window. For example, both Chelsea and Liverpool are set to fight for winger Bernard, UOL reported on Saturday. The Brazilian international’s contract ends at the conclusion of this season, although Shakhtar are said to be looking to keep him. After all, it was a Bernard brace just last month that helped a 10-man Shakhtar defeat Feyenoord 2-1 to solidify the team’s grip on second place in the group. In addition, Shakhtar are currently first in the Ukrainian Premier League standings.
