Entering the fifth game of the group stage, CSKA Moscow and Benfica are third and fourth, respectively, in their Champions League group. However, Moscow can eliminate Benfica from European competitions if they pick up a point on Wednesday. If Benfica are going to advance they need to win their last two in the group stage.
CSKA Moscow split the two games with Basel, and sit behind the Swiss side on goal differential. Moscow won their last Champions League game 2-1 in Basel. If CSKA are going to advance to the round of 16, they need to defeat Benfica and look close the gap in goal differential. Viktor Goncharenko’s side will rely on Vitinho and Alan Dzagoev for goals. Both players scored in CSKA’s 4-2 win against SKA Khabarovsk over the weekend.
Benfica are looking for their first points in the group stage. The Portuguese side have scored one goal in Champions League, blowing a 1-0 lead against CSKA in the final half hour of the opening game of the group stage. Brazilian striker Jonas has 13 goals in 11 games domestically but has yet to play a factor in the Champions League. If Benfica want to keep their European hopes alive, they need Jonas to find the back of the net.
