Central Michigan(-17.5) at Kent State: HIT! This game was closer than it should have been….
Ohio(-12.5) at Akron: MISS! Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Double digit dog loses starting quarterback only to have him beat the favored team. The only difference was Iowa State was on the road against a top five team when they did it.
Eastern Michigan at Miami(OH)(-3.5): HIT! The Eagles played spoiler this year, knocking out the Redhawks a week after they were eliminated themselves. I do wish that I would have got to see Roback in another bowl game. Well, there is always the Senior Bowl!
Western Michigan at Northern Illinois(-9.5): HIT! I think that Western Michigan has proven enough times that they aren’t a bad team just because their coach rowed west to Minneapolis.
Toledo(-16.5) at Bowling Green: HIT! Okay, so it’s just the Bowling Green defense that is bad. That offense looked good in the first half led by Jarrett Doege, younger brother of former Texas Tech star Seth. The Falcons are going to light up scoreboards for the next few years. Doege could be as exciting as Omar Jacobs, just in a different way.
Buffalo(-20.5) at Ball State: HIT! Yep, Buffalo won, but didn’t cover. They made me sweat it out though.
Tulsa at South Florida(-22.5): HIT! If you would have told me that 47 points would be scored in this game, I would have asked by which team. Combined, I would have told you that you were nuts.
Middle Tennessee State(-2.5) at Western Kentucky: MISS! This did nothing to alleviate my trust issues with WKU…..
UNLV at New Mexico(EVEN): MISS! Well, I knew this one could go either way. That’s why I never would have bet this thing….
Virginia at Miami(FL)(-19.5): HIT! The Cavs were poised to pull the upset after three quarters, but they got ran off the field in the fourth. It’s all about conditioning.
Michigan at Wisconsin(-7.5): MISS! The Badgers always seem to go through a season seeming overrated. Then when the schedule finally gets tough, they come up with convincing wins. This was a convincing win. Of course, had Peters been able to stay in the game, this may have been a different story.
Louisiana-Monroe at Auburn(-36.5): HIT! Auburn completely dominated this game, and was never really a threat to cover this massive line.
TCU(-6.5) at Texas Tech: HIT! Is Texas Tech content to go 6-6 and make a bowl after the bar that Mike Leach set? I like Kliff Kingsbury, but at some point this teams needs to improve, right?
Central Florida(-13.5) at Temple: HIT! It would truly be a shame to see Scott Frost take this from a winless team to an undefeated team in only two years and not get to coach them in the New Year’s Six bowl. Will he really wait until after the season to take his next job? Can he?
Mississippi State(-13.5) at Arkansas: MISS! *EXPLETIVE DELETED* Seriously? Are moral victories enough to save Bielema’s job? You would think that after this long they wouldn’t be.
SMU at Memphis(-12.5): MISS! Well,I cleared the over by 41 points, so there’s that. Memphis almost cleared the over by themselves!
Minnesota at Northwestern(-6.5): HIT! I figured Northwestern would win, but I didn’t figure it would be the most lopsided win for the Wildcats in the series’ history. Minnesota has a long was to go, especially with the defense regressing like it has.
Cincinnati(-3.5) at East Carolina: MISS! Nothing like busting a spread by 31 points. That Cincinnati defense is bad, but the offense really isn’t that much better.
Texas at West Virginia(-3.5): HIT! That Texas defense is likely the best in the conference. I know we’re rivals and all, but, uh, can we borrow your defense so as to not embarrass the conference in the post season again? Sincerely, Oklahoma fans.
Rutgers at Indiana(-11.5): HIT! I know that the Big Ten(14) wanted Rutgers for the New York City following, but are those people really going to follow a team that gets shut out by a lousy Indiana defense? Well, I guess they still follow the Jets, so anything is possible…..
Pittsburgh at Virginia Tech(-15.5): HIT! Another uninspiring performance by the Hokies. They had better not play like that this week…..
Rice at Old Dominion(-7.5): MISS! ……and this is why you never bet fledgling FBS schools……
Fresno State(-2.5) at Wyoming: MISS! You can’t blame the Wyoming defense. They did their part. This offense was stagnant without Josh Allen. Even worse than I thought they would be.
Iowa State(-8.5) at Baylor: HIT! Believe it or not, the Cyclones still have a shot at the Big 12(10) title game. You know what? I almost hope they make it and win again. It would prove how utterly preposterous a title game in a ten team conference really is and expose this blatant cash grab. The cash grab isn’t so great when you screw yourself out of playoff money, huh? Note I said almost. There is no way I’m going against my team, even though I do enjoy delicious irony.
Arizona State(-6.5) at Oregon State: HIT! Yay! Free money! As opposed to the Mississippi State team that must have missed the bus to Fayetteville.
Charlotte at Southern Mississippi(-17.5): MISS! Of course they cover this time. I finally picked against them.
Louisiana Tech(-17.5) at UTEP: HIT! I don’t like seeing UTEP down like this, but it sure does make betting easier!
Hawaii at Utah State(-10.5): HIT! Bad on the mainland doesn’t even begin to describe just how sad getting shut out by this version of the Aggies is.
Massachusetts at BYU(-3.5): HIT! The Minutemen may not be going to a bowl this year, but this program has made some huge strides. UMass had not beaten a FBS team while a member of the FBS, nor had they won a road game. They can cross both of those off of the list this year!
Texas State at Arkansas State(-26.5): HIT! I should have went higher on this one. Oh well, a win is a win. And it gets me closer to 55%!
South Alabama(-4.5) at Georgia Southern: MISS! Say what?? A team that just beat Sun Belt heavyweight Arkansas State outright in Jonesboro gets shut out by a winless Sun Belt team the next week? Yeah, that makes perfect sense. It also illustrates why casinos will always make money. Who could have seen this coming?
Oklahoma(-37.5) at Kansas: MISS! This game was a disaster for Kansas from the coin toss when the captains refused to shake Baker Mayfeild’s hand. That started a giant mess, most of which had little to do with what was going on on the field. Oh yeah, that half bit me too.
Kentucky at Georgia(-21.5): HIT! I don’t get why Mark Stoops isn’t held to a higher standard. The SEC East is winnable for a lot of teams right now, yet Kentucky lays egg after egg. What gives? Does he have dirt on the Chancellor or something?
Navy at Notre Dame(-17.5): HIT! Forget the half, The Irish were lucky to escape in this one!
Illinois at Ohio State(-40.5): HIT! It’s saying that lines are out of hand if a team like Ohio State can’t cover this at home.
Kansas State at Oklahoma State(-17.5): MISS! As you can tell by the bet, I wasn’t all that sure about this, but I never would have guessed that the Wildcats would win outright.
San Jose State at Colorado State(-32.5): HIT! This was never a game. It is just further proof that you can’t cover these lines without a strong defense. Sometimes you can’t even with one (Ohio State).
Syracuse at Louisville(-13.5): HIT!This was an absolute beatdown by the Cardinals. I will take the win because Dungey was out, but I don’t know that he would have made the difference. He can’t play defense. Neither can the rest of the team….
Georgia Tech(-6.5) at Duke: MISS! This was en epic choke job by the Yellow Jackets. Now the Yellow Jackets need a win against arch rival Georgia (piece of cake, right?) to make a bow. If you want to argue that they are missing a game, please. They weren’t going to beat Central Florida either….
Purdue at Iowa(-7.5): MISS! I deserved this for betting on Iowa. That makes Friday’s game damn near impossible to handicap.
Nebraska at Penn State(-26.5): MISS! Hey, wait a minute. Wasn’t Penn State supposed to have a good defense, or is that just some of that fake news that I hear so much about? Allowing 44 points to this Nebraska team should count as a loss…..
Maryland at Michigan State(-16.5): MISS! I should be used to ugly games from Michigan State by now. Or not, since I keep picking them…..
UAB at Florida(-10.5): MISS! Now before you go saying that this means nothing and Florida shouldn’t be this happy about beating UAB, realize that Florida still has a shot at a bowl now. UAB is already there, but the Gators need to beat Florida State and they might get in. The postponed game was against Northern Colorado, and likely would have been a win.
Houston(-9.5) at Tulane: MISS! Tulane decided that they were solid. For this week, anyway.
Coastal Carolina at Idaho(-7.5): HIT! Does this classify as a changing of the guard? Idaho, on the way to FCS, cedes their spot to first year FBS team Coastal Carolina.
New Mexico State(-4.5) at Louisiana: MISS! I knew there was a reason that I didn’t trust that defense…..
Army at North Texas(-2.5): MISS! This was a great game. One of those so good that I don’t really mind that I missed the pick.
LSU(-15.5) at Tennessee: HIT! The Vols hung around for a while. That’s progress, at least.
Arizona at Oregon(-2.5): MISS! Looks like I picked the wrong sorry defense…..
Texas A&M(-1.5) at Mississippi: MISS! This was a close game. A&M is playing to keep their coach’s job at this point, so any win counts. Some think they need to beat LSU for Sumlin to stay. I’m not convinced of that. If they at least play well, it may be enough.
Connecticut at Boston College(-21.5): HIT! The irony of this is that this was a home game for UConn…..at Fenway Park. I called it like it really was.
Marshall at UTSA(EVEN): HIT! This was a great game if you like field goals. At any rate, the Roadrunner defense played very well and the kicker put them in a bowl game. It wont be the Alamo Bowl, but I don’t think these guys care.
Florida International at Florida Atlantic(-14.5): MISS! There are a ton of jobs open, and the pickings are going to get slim for a few schools. At least one of them is going to call Lane because of the way the Owls are putting up points. I’m not going to comment on what I think of that, but think something along the lines of Bobby Petrino. Made some mistakes and burned bridges early. Humbled himself at Western Kentucky, now is back at a major and (allegedly) happy.
North Carolina State at Wake Forest(-1.5): MISS! I wont say that the ACC is the best conference, but I do think they are tougher in the middle than any of the others. They have their dogs (North Carolina defense, Syracuse without Dungey), but one of those dogs knocked off Clemson. You wont see that in any other conference. Would Kansas, Illinois, Oregon State, or Tennessee do that? Doubtful.
Missouri(-8.5) at Vanderbilt: MISS! If you needed any further proof that Missouri was back, destroying Vanderbilt in Nashville ought to do that. This was never a game.
UCLA at USC(-15.5): MISS! The one rivalry game that I pick to be a blowout didn’t work. This was the best game that the UCLA defense has played all season.
California at Stanford(-14.5): HIT! I figured this would be pretty close. It was a little closer than I though, but I’ll take it.
Air Force at Boise State(-17.5): HIT! Boise didn’t really hit their stride until the second half. Then Air Force was really overmatched.
Utah at Washington(-17.5): MISS! Where did the Washington offense go? They still have most of the same components. Actually, maybe the defense is what made the offense look so good last year.
Nevada at San Diego State(-16.5): HIT! Rashaad Penny had a truly great game, and the Aztecs still barely covered this!
I had another solid week with my against the spread picks. Despite starting he week 20-10, I stumbled to a 33-27 finish. That still puts me closer to my goal! I now sit at 351-306 on the season. I now sit at 53.4% on the season. I am happy with that, especially after last year, but I still want that 55! Did I win any points since my picks did fairly well?
This week’s totals follow the number. The season totals are in parentheses.
1. 5-2 (50-46) = 4
2. 13-8 (127-105) = 44
3. 12-9 (105-84) = 63
4. 1-5 (45-48) = -12
5. 2-3 (24-23) = 5
Despite a solid week, I only won one point. That was thanks to poor showings on the four and five point games. However, I have still gained 104 points on the season, and have 61 points total for the last three seasons.
