Chargers at Cowboys: Highlights, score and recap

On Thanksgiving afternoon at AT&T Stadium, the Dallas Cowboys were humbled by the Los Angeles Chargers. What did we learn from this Turkey Day tilt?

Although they own a 4-6 record after 10 games, the Los Angeles Chargers are just two games behind the Kansas City Chiefs in the slumping AFC West. Anthony Lynn’s club was coming off a 54-24 thrashing of the Buffalo Bills as they made their way to AT&T Stadium on Thanksgiving afternoon.

While the Bolts were playing on Turkey Day for the first time since 1969, the Dallas Cowboys prepared for their 50th Thanksgiving Day contest. The franchise was 30-18-1 lifetime on this holiday. But Jason Garrett’s club was also coming off lopsided losses to the Falcons (27-7) and Eagles (37-9).

So which team looked like turkeys in the interconference tilt? Dallas manages only 84 yards in the first 30 minutes of play. And believe it or not, things got even worse in the second half for the Cowboys as the Charged rolled to a 28-6 victory.

Three Stars

1. QB Philip Rivers

The 14-year pro was red-hot throughout the game and made it look easy against the slumping Cowboys. Rivers hit on 27-of-33 throws for a whopping 434 yards and three scores as the Bolts crawled closer to the .500 mark.

2. WR Keenan Allen

It was a huge afternoon for the unheralded wideout. Targeted 14 times by teammate Philip Rivers, Allen hauled in 11 receptions for 172 yards and one touchdown in the Bolts’ win. Anthony Lynn’s club rolled up 515 total yards in the 28-6 triumph.

3. CB Desmond King

He finished the game with three solo tackles, one pass defensed and a pair of stops on special teams. But it was his 90-yard interception return for a touchdown with 7:41 to play killed a promising Cowboys’ drive and gave the Chargers a 28-6 edge on the way to a road win.

Odds

A pick’ em contest early in the week, the Chargers wound up being a 1-point favorite by kickoff. The over/under stood at 46.5 as game time approached.

Next Week

The Los Angeles Chargers get a little extra time to prepare for a visit from the Cleveland Browns in Week 13. That’s followed by another home game one week later as they host the Washington Redskins. Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys will be playing a third consecutive home game and a second straight Thursday tilt as they host the Redskins in prime time.
