Though How to Get Away with Murder’s season finale was underwhelming and anti-climatic, I’ve finally adjusted to how the rest of the season will likely go.

Is there a new episode of How to Get Away with Murder tonight? No, thank goodness.

Thank goodness because I need a few weeks to step back from this show and decide where I want it to go next. More importantly, I have to reconcile that How to Get Away with Murder‘s trying something different this season. After half a dozen episodes or so and a rather lackluster winter finale, I’m disappointed by this season. Especially when we compare it to other TGIT shows.

They’re clumped together on the same night, so it’s perfectly fair to compare each show.

An old Grey’s Anatomy writer and showrunner returned to the fold this season and made 8 p.m. ET on Thursday nights my most anticipated hour of the week. Meanwhile, Scandal did what it does best and made every episode a power struggle between Olivia Pope and whoever was bold enough to get in the ring with her.

Then, we have How to Get Away with Murder, which started so slowly and made such an about-face from its first three seasons that by the time we arrived at episode 8, I found myself taking micro-naps throughout the hour.

Unfortunately for me, I was wide awake for the grisly moment where Laurel entered the elevator on her way up to see Annalise and delivered her premature baby. Some people like their television that way, but I wasn’t on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened to her baby anyway. So there was no payoff there. Add the fact that we spent most of our time this season with Annalise in the courtroom or at therapy, watching her do infant compressions felt even more offputting. Pardon me for not thinking jarring discomfort is good television. Seriously, you guys, Simon accidentally shot himself in the head being nosy. It doesn’t get any weaker than that.

I no longer worry how things will be resolved as How to Get Away with Murder makes its biggest twist this season an inconsistent tone and becomes the weakest leg of TGIT.
