Alabama plays 3-on-5 against Minnesota after ridiculous series of events
By Chris Stone
You may never see what happened in Alabama-Minnesota ever again.
The Alabama Crimson Tide may have lost their chance at the College Football Playoff, but honestly, the school’s basketball team may have had a more difficult day. The Crimson Tide were squaring off with the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the Barclays Center Classic’s final game when due to a ridiculous series of events, they ended up playing basketball 3-on-5:
The sequence started when Minnesota point guard Nate Mason and Alabama point guard Collin Sexton got into a trash talking match with one another after Mason dropped Sexton with a little shake at the 3-point line. Both players assessed technical fouls as a result. Mason picked up a second technical foul going back to the bench and was ejected. Golden Gophers head coach Richard Pitino was also given a technical foul as part of the exchange.
Shortly after all of that, several players got involved in a scrum following a made Alabama 3-pointer. Since it happened right in front of the Crimson Tide’s bench, every Alabama player not in the game got off the bench and came onto the floor. That’s an automatic ejection:
It didn’t end there for the Tide, though. About a minute later, Alabama’s Dazon Ingram committed his fifth personal foul, leaving the team with just four eligible players:
And then, we got to three. John Petty went up for a jumper from the top of the key and came down awkwardly. Petty couldn’t exit the floor on his power, leaving Alabama with just three eligible players: Sexton, Riley Norris and Galin Smith.
Next: Kansas is shooting 3s at an unprecedented rate
Oddly, the situation seemed to put the Gophers in an awkward spot and behind the Sexton’s ridiculous heroics, the Crimson Tide actually kept the contest close. Nonetheless, Minnesota escaped with a top 25 win in what will certainly go down as the craziest game of the college basketball season.
