Borussia Dortmund are free-falling down the Bundesliga table ahead of Saturday’s Revierderby with Schalke. Peter Bosz’s team have picked up one point in their last five games, losing 2-1 to Stuttgart last weekend. In the Champions League, Dortmund were eliminated from the competition after losing 2-1 to Tottenham. Schalke are having a bounce-back season after being very disappointing last season. The Royal Blues are second in the Bundesliga after picking up 14 points in their last six games.
Dortmund’s struggles are tied to their struggles at the back. No matter what combination of players Bosz uses at the back, the unit has failed to click. Sokratis is expected to start after not playing against Tottenham. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has served his suspension and returned to the lineup against Tottenham, scoring the lone goal. Maximilian Philipp and Christian Pulisic will likely start next to Aubameyang after neither player featured against Spurs.
Domenico Tedesco helped second division club Erzgebirge Aue avoid relegation last season. Tedesco’s success caught the eye of Schalke who hired him to take over the club that finished 10th last season. Under Tedesco, Schalke have switched to a three-man back line and introduced more youth academy players into the lineup. American Weston McKennie has benefitted from the arrivial of a new manager, featuring in eight games this season. Guido Burgstaller and Leon Goretzka lead Schalke with four goals, with Goretzka’s name coming up in transfer talk. The German international’s contract expires at the end of the season and is expected to move to one of the biggest clubs in Europe.
