Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayern Munich was the biggest rivalry in the Bundesliga in the 1970s. However, their rivalry has faded over the years, with Bayern emerging as the dominant team in Germany. Bayern enter the weekend with a six-point lead over second place Schalke. Gladbach are fourth in the Bundesliga with 21 points but have the ninth best goal differential in the league.
Bayern easily defeated Augsburg 3-0 in their last league game. In Champions League, Bayern beat Anderlecht 2-1. However, the win came at a price as injuries continue to pile up for the club. Thiago is expected to be out until January after he picked up a thigh injury. With Thiago out, James Rodriguez will assume a bigger role with the club. Arjen Robben also left Wednesday’s game with an injury and is unlikely to play on Saturday. While Robben and Thiago will miss the game, there is a chance that Thomas Muller returns to the lineup.
After only picking up eight points in their first six games, Monchengladbach have climbed up the table after picking up 13 of 18 points in their last six games. Gladbach defeated Hertha Berlin 4-2 last weekend, with Raffael scoring one of the best goals of the season. Raffael, along with Lars Stindl, and Thorgan Hazard have each scored four goals this season. Stindl’s play this season has made him a favorite to make Germany’s squad at the World Cup.
