Italy’s top-flight moves along this weekend with a mid-table clash between two fallen powers: AC Milan and Torino. The Rossoneri, currently in seventh-place with 19 points, takes on the Granata, who are one rung lower with 18.

There was a lot of hope surrounding this AC Milan side after it spent £210 million during the summer transfer period to rebuild its roster. All the changes and a tough schedule did not help. Add to the mix contenders like first-place Napoli and defending champions Juventus and competition for the top positions has been fierce.

While a win is a must on Sunday at the San Siro, AC Milan can do very little to salvage what has been a nightmare season. It will be difficult for it to make up ground in order to grab a Champions League start and mounting injuries hasn’t helped coach Vincenzo Montella’s efforts.

The team’s star midfielder Suso could be set to miss the next two matches after injuring his back in last Sunday’s 2-1 loss at Napoli. The 24-year-old has been one of the few bright spots for Montella this season. Calcio Mercato reported that Suso trained with the team this past Monday separately from his teammates in order to protect him from further injury, but is doubtful against Torino.

There is talk, however, that another AC Milan defeat could spell doom for Montella. With six losses in 13 games so far in Serie A, Montella told reporters Wednesday that his team is “under fire” and that he has chosen to ignore the media’s coverage of him and his team.

“We are under fire, but we need to focus on what is happening on the field,” he said. “It’s got to the point where I’m no longer even paying any attention because too much is being said. The same goes for my own job, which you keep saying is under threat. I can see positive signs every day and I can see a lot of calm, which is precisely what we need to reach our goals.”

Torino, meanwhile, are doing well for a team without the spending power of AC Milan. The biggest news to come out of the Torino camp were the recent revelations that team president Urbano Cairo has been in talks with Real Madrid for the sale of striker Andrea Belotti. The striker, who has five goals for the team across all competitions, was part of the Italy side that failed to qualify for the World Cup. Belotti’s inability to score against Sweden may have lowered his stock, but he nonetheless is the leader of this Torino team that lacks the big names.
