The Toronto Argonauts face the Calgary Stampeders in the 105th Grey Cup to determine the CFL champion. While many expected Calgary to advance to the Grey Cup after losing as high favorites in late year’s game. Almost no one picked the Argos to make it to the Grey Cup after finishing last a season ago.
After finishing last a season ago, the Argos made the bizarre decision to fire their general manager on the eve of free agency and have their head coach leave for the NFL less than 48 hours later. Toronto went out and hired former Montreal general manager Jim Popp and head coach Jim Trestman. The combination helped turn around an Argos team that had missed the playoffs in two of the previous three season. Toronto advanced to the Grey Cup after defeated Saskatchewan in the East Final behind a Ricky Ray game-winning touchdown drive after the Roughriders thought they had won the game with a punt return touchdown.
Ray has won three Grey Cups in his hall of fame career and will look to add a fourth to his trophy case. The Toronto quarterback when given time can pick apart any defense. With the emergence of James Wilder Jr., the Argos have one of the best backs in the CFL. Wilder Jr., recorded over 1,500 yards in 18 games this season. However, against Calgary, Ray and Wilder will be up against the top defense in the CFL. The Stampeders allowed only 19.8 points per game in the regular season and playoffs. Outside of the battle of the lines, the key matchups will feature shutdown corner Tommie Campbell matching up against receiver S.J. Green and middle linebacker Alex Singleton going up against Wilder Jr.
Calgary head coach Dave Dickenson has gone 28-6-2 in his first two seasons. However, in his first season, the Stampeders lost the Grey Cup to Ottawa. This season, Calgary has the chance for redemption on Sunday. The Stampeders advanced to the Grey Cup after a 32-28 win over Edmonton. However, that victory was overshadowed by Edmonton head coach Jason Maas deciding to kick up field goal down seven points with just over a minute remaining.
In the Grey Cup, Calgary will rely on their running game. Jerome Messam went for over 1,000 yards in the regular season and combined with Roy Finch for 152 in the West Final. If Messam has a big game against Toronto, Calgary will be able to keep Ray on the sidelines. Finch was the CFL’s leading return man and could be the game’s X-factor. Quarterback Bo-Levi Mitchell struggled a year ago but will look to play a turnover-free game in order to win his second Grey Cup.
