Brandon Peters proved to Jim Harbaugh in 2017 that he can take over this team next season.

The quarterback position has been a revolving door for the Michigan Wolverines in 2017. Wilton Speight started the season before injuring his back, and John O’Korn was benched over Brandon Peters. Then, Peters got a concussion and O’Korn was thrown back in at the position.

That revolving door is about to come to a halt in 2018 and Peters is the guy stopping it.

O’Korn is a redshirt senior, so his playing days are over, and Speight announced on Sunday that he is transferring from the University of Michigan. That leaves just three returning quarterbacks on the roster for 2018 — redshirt junior Alex Malzone, redshirt freshman Dylan McCaffrey, and redshirt sophomore Peters. Harbaugh has two freshmen who are coming in 2018 with Kevin Doyle, and Joe Milton.

While Malzone hasn’t thrown a pass in the two games he has appeared in over the last two seasons for the Wolverines, McCaffrey will be the main competition for Peters next season, but this is Peters’ job to lose. Doyle and Milton won’t be threats unless they can somehow blow Peters away in practice, but odds are they won’t and will be redshirted.

Peters has done well with what he was asked to do so far in 2017, going 37-of-64 for 486 yards and four touchdowns. Peters looked like he has played the position for Jim Harbaugh before, not some young freshman who is lost and doesn’t know what he was doing.

The youngster made smart throws and never threw an interception. The only mistake he made was fumbling the ball inside the Wisconsin Badger 20-yard line as he tried to extend the distance on the running play, but he’s young and he will learn when to do something like that, and when not to.

Peters should be back for whatever bowl game the Wolverines get this season, and that will be his moment to prove to Harbaugh that if he wants to win games in 2018, he is your guy and he deserves it. He has looked and dressed the part, now he will go out and play it.

Harbaugh will have his hands full at the quarterback position when spring and summer practice rolls around next season, but for now, he is getting ready for whatever opponent is thrown at him in December.
