College Basketball Rankings: Projected Top 25 for Week 4
After a disastrous offseason, anything on the positive side of things is good for Louisville. The Cardinals received some unfortunate news last week as freshman Brian Bowen was ruled ineligible after an FBI investigation found that his party had accepted money in the recruiting process. Still, the Cardinals are moving on, even without Rick Pitino. They beat Southern Illinois by 42 points and then St. Francis (PA) by 12 to improve to 4-0 on the year.
Texas A&M vs. USC might make for a decent football game, but who knew that it would be a matchup between a couple of top-20 teams this early in the year? The Trojans were unable to take down the red-hot Aggies on Sunday night and will drop slightly because of it. This was nearly their second loss in the past week as they escaped last Sunday with a road win over Vanderbilt in overtime. Andy Enfield’s talented squad got a wake-up call.
Minnesota escaped an embarrassing loss against No. 25 during the long holiday weekend. How could a close win over a ranked opponent be embarrassing? The Crimson Tide were down to just three eligible players and out-scored the Gophers in the final 10 minutes of action while playing down 3-on-5. That’s unheard of. Still, the Gophers found a way to win and beat Alabama A&M as well as UMass earlier in the week.
One of the biggest surprise teams of the early season thus far has to be Texas A&M. While the football program is going through a rough time trying to find its next head coach, the basketball team continues to win. Right now, the Aggies are 6-0 and have two wins over ranked opponents already on the year. The first was against West Virginia in the Armed Forces Classic to open the season and the second was against No. 10 USC on Sunday night. This team may have just scratched the surface.
North Carolina had an impressive run to the PK80 title game with wins against Portland and Arkansas, while also beating Stanford on the road earlier in the week. The Tar Heels had handled all opponents up to that point, but a matchup with Michigan State on Sunday seemed to have them overmatched. The Spartans beat the Tar Heels, handing them their first loss of the year.
