A new name has surfaced for the head coaching opening at Arizona State, and that name is former NFL head coach Herm Edwards.

Despite winning the Territorial Cup this past weekend against the rival Arizona Wildcats, the Arizona State Sun Devils decided it was time to move on from head coach Todd Graham, creating yet another open on this insane 2017 coaching carousel. However, the initial thinking was that former Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin, who was also let go over the weekend, would jump right into the job, maybe even as early as Sunday.

Well, that hasn’t happened yet, leading many to believe Arizona State could be looking in a different direction. A few names have surfaced in the days since Graham was fired, but maybe the most eye-opening one was named on Tuesday — former NFL head coach and current ESPN NFL analyst Herm Edwards.

Yes, according to Football Scoop, the former New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs head coach has emerged as a candidate for the job in Tempe. Not only is he a candidate, but Football Scoop also notes that it’s a very real possibility that some sort of deal could get done to lure Edwards back into the coaching game.

While Edwards does have some pretty admirable NFL coaching experience, his only stint in the college game was back from 1987-89 where he was a defensive backs coach for San Jose State. He would join the Chiefs as a scout in 1990 and never made a return to the college game. But, from the looks of it, that could be changing soon if something were to be agreed upon here.

Finally, should Edwards take the position, it’s also reported that he would keep much of the staff already set at Arizona State.

This may seem insane, but hey, this entire coaching carousel has been nothing but absurdity thus far, so should anyone really be surprised by anything?

One thing is for sure, though — should this go down, then Sun Devils players better be ready to “PLAY. TO. WIN. THE. GAME.”
